HISTORY

In the mid-18th century, turnpike trusts improved the roads of England and Wales, and coaches could travel more widely and carry fare-paying passengers. In 1784, mail coaches were introduced, also carrying passengers, and a nationwide network gradually developed. The first local mail coaches from Monmouth to Brecon ran in 1797.

At that time, Castle Road was the main road carrying all traffic on Brecknock Way and from the then new mountain road to the Usk Bridge.

The new Llangynidr Tollgate was opened in 1792 and was let for £96. Also in 1792, the Tollbooth was built, and Turnpike Cottage was built to house the tollgate keeper. The same family, the Parrys, lived in Turnpike Cottage from 1808 until the early 21st century.

Turnpikes operated in Wales for over 100 years but were highly contentious with local communities. From 1839 to 1842, tensions came to a head in a series of uprisings against the tolls, known as the Rebecca Riots.

An Act passed in 1844 reformed the Turnpike Trusts, and they began to decline. The growth of the railway system also offered another alternative, which devalued the need for road transport.

Many Turnpikes were abandoned by the end of the 1870s, although closing them down was difficult because of outstanding debts from earlier investments.

In 1888 responsibility for highways was transferred to county councils. It is not known when the Llangynidr tollgate ceased to operate, but the last tollgate in Wales was removed in 1895.
